Farhad Hakimzadeh has earned a distinctive place in the world as a successful businessman, industrialist, and supporter of the arts. Born in Tehran in 1948, he left his native country at a young age to attend private schools in Germany and then continued his studies in the United States. While enrolled at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Hakimzadeh contributed to the Limits to Growth research project, which set out to analyze the effect of population growth on the planet’s natural resources. He would later bring this knowledge back to Iran as part of the country’s long-term communications policy and contribute to the editing and publishing of the project’s results. Farhad Hakimzadeh went on to earn a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School, producing as his thesis Capital Markets of Iran.
Farhad Hakimzadeh returned to Iran in 1973, eventually pursuing a career as an industrialist by heading his father’s various manufacturing plants and chairing their respective boards. With the onset of the Islamic Revolution in the late 1970s, he left Iran again and established himself in Houston, Texas, as a real estate developer. Farhad Hakimzadeh later joined his family in London, where he pursued additional business opportunities in book publishing. Meanwhile, he began the task of organizing the Iran Heritage Foundation (IHF), which would prove highly effectual and influential in the creation of arts and cultural programs focusing on Iran.
Since Farhad Hakimzadeh established the IHF in 1995, the foundation has contributed to the creation of dozens of conferences and seminars, art and history exhibitions, and numerous fellowships at the University of Oxford, University College Northampton, and other learning institutions in the U.K. Among the many successful projects supported by the IHF, Hakimzadeh is especially pleased with the Rustam Iranian School, a Persian language school located in the U.K., and Iran: New Voices, the first festival of Iranian film and theater outside of Iran.
